Russian users of micro-blogging service Twitter managed to bring words written in Cyrillic alphabet to Twitter trends, RIA Novosti reports. To become a trend, words in Twitter messages have to be mentioned at least 10,000 times during an hour. Knowing that Twitter is mostly used by English speaking users, it's a great accomplishment of users who post their messages in Russian language.
On the global scale, there are over 200 mln users of the micro-blogging service Twitter, while there are around 1 mln Russian speaking users in Twitter.
During recent protests in Russian and Moscow in particular, the Russian word сахарова ("sakharova" from Sakhakov Blvrd where the last protest took place) came to top mentioned words on Twitter.
While Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev was speaking in the Council of Federation on 22 December 2011, his last name became a ternd on Twitter.
Interesting enough that mostly words in connection with political events in Russian jump to the top of Russian Twitter. One of the most popular words in Russian Twitter is Путин (Putin, the last name of Russia's PM).
